Coziest Little Rainbow Pillow

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

I made a little rainbow pillow for my cute sister-in-law's dorm room, and then the internet wanted MORE.

Update 9/27/20: I think I got the number of increases wrong. Sorry if you've given this pattern a try, and your rainbow didn't turn out the way you envisioned because of this! I'm pretty sure it will work better if each row increases by 10 instead of 8. Maybe hold off on starting this pattern until I get a chance to rework it. Sorry again!

Update 9/28/20: I updated the pattern below. Your rainbow should end up with a nice flat bottom now. Please let me know if there are any issues.

Ok my babies, I made you a pattern. This is my first try ever writing one, so I would love feedback, but BE NICE. Enjoy! :)

Some notes:

This pattern is written with US Crochet terms.

Ch 2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a dc.

Hook size doesn’t really matter, but you want it tight enough so that stuffing won’t come out. I used 2 strands of worsted weight yarn with a J hook, and it worked well.

Rainbow

Ch 12, join with a Sl to form a ring.

Row 1: Ch 2, 2 dc in each chain st, Sl to first dc. (24 dc)

Row 2: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, *2 dc in each of next 5 dc**, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * to **, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, Sl to first dc. (34 dc)

Row 3: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, *(2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc) 5 times**, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * to **, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, Sl to first dc. (44 dc)

Switch to a new color.

Row 4: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, *(2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc) 5 times**, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * to **, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, Sl to first dc. (54 dc)

Row 5: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, *(2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc) 5 times**, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * to **, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, Sl to first dc. (64 dc)

Row 6: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, *(2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc) 5 times**, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * to **, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, Sl to first dc. (74 dc)

Switch to a new color.

Row 7: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, *(2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc) 5 times**, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * to **, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, Sl to first dc. (84 dc)

Row 8: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, *(2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 6 dc) 5 times**, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * to **, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, Sl to first dc. (94 dc)

Row 9: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, *(2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc) 5 times**, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, rep from * to **, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, Sl to first dc. (104 dc)

Switch to a new color.

Continue on with this pattern increasing with each row until your rainbow gets as big as you want it. With the updated pattern, I made mine 18 rows and switched colors every 3 rows. My finished pillow measures 21" across at the base and 11" tall at the top of the arch.

Pom Pom Border

When you’re done with your big oval, fold it in half to make the rainbow shape. Sew together both sides of the little arch down at the bottom to close up that part of the rainbow.

Beginning at one end of the rainbow on the outer edge, sc through the first st on the front and back layer together.

Ch 3.

To make a cluster stitch:

Yarn over (yo) and insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, yo and pull hook back through chain, yo and pull the yarn through 2 loops. Repeat 2 more times through the same chain. You should end up with 4 loops on your hook. Yo and pull yarn through all 4 loops.

From the top of this cluster stitch, ch 3 and repeat the steps above to make another cluster in the loop that closed the first cluster stitch.

Join with a Sl down at the bottom of the first cluster stitch.

My instructions are based on this pattern, and this blog has really good pictures for the steps: http://onceuponapinkmoon.blogspot.com/2013/09/pom-pom-edge.html

Sc along the edge of the rainbow through both front and back to sew them together and evenly add as many pom poms as you want. Mine are spaced every 6 st.

When you get kind of close to the end, stop and jam in a bunch of polyfill. You’re going to need more than you think you will. If you don’t stuff it enough, it’ll look sad and lumpy.

Once you’re satisfied with its plumpness, finish sc and pom pom-ing to the end and make one last pom pom in the last st.

Please don't steal my pattern, but feel free to sell any pillows you make. Crediting back to me for the pattern would be very much appreciated. I'd also love to see them, so please tag me @yarnbombsaway and/or use the hashtag #yarnbombsaway on Instagram!
